A very sensitive and emotional subject for women, obstetric medicine doesn't just cover pregnancy and birth, it also encompasses other aspects of female health, such as sterilisation operations.

A lot of consultants practising in this area will have sub-specialties, including oncology, fetal medicine and reproductive medicine, to name but a few.

If an operation is performed badly, or treatment given incorrectly, it can have painful and far-reaching consequences.

Because of the intimate nature of the resulting problems, it can be hard to talk about, so we'll make sure your case is handled with the utmost sensitivity and discretion. We've been making obstetrics and gynaecology claims for many years and have an in-house nurse who helps us establish that treatment has been negligent so that we can pursue your case.

Here are a few examples of the type of cases we have successfully secured compensation for:

  • Perineal tears
  • Fistulas
  • Anaesthetic awareness during gynaecological procedures
  • Undiagnosed disabilities
  • Surgical errors resulting in iatrogenic injuries

Childbirth and Fertility departments responsible for over 50% of clinical negligence claims

In the UK over the last three years the NHS has paid out more than £60 million in clinical negligence claims. What is farm more interesting about the report produced by the Conservatives last week is that more than half of the payouts were for negligence in the obstetrics and gynaecology departments. Payouts for these departments are close to £35 million.

It is unclear whether these figures are due to the nature of the work done in UK obstetrics and gynaecology departments or whether it is due to current procedures and support. Either way, you can be sure it is something we will be hearing a lot more about.
